Khandera: The Village

The Village life is one of tradition, work, leisure, tradition and more. There was a lot to learn in the village. There was a whole lifetime of "proper" to learn in just a few days. Fortunately for me, I wasn't expected to know it all. Though, I was given a quick tutorial to make sure that I knew the basics.

A nice family, they tend little, cute goats. This family is Muslim. The village has a nice mix of Hindu and muslim families. Sadly, they seem to have found a quiet detante. Sad only because they have much more that unites them than divides them, but they don't intermingle much at all.

Two charming girls from the Brahman family. They were very intrigued by the freakshow that had come to town... me. We couldn't talk... at all, but they captivated my attention with their grins and beautiful eyes.

Villagers working in the fields. I think that they were weeding out the bad plants and protecting the good ones. They did this for hours, crouched in a little group.

Above: The five mounds. A religious site within the village. The villagers have decorated it with red flags and candles and more.

Above Left: Alveera Khan at the top of the village hill. Relaxing, after the little hike was a nice reward.

Left: Me, after a little hike.

Above Left: A Brahman man outside his home.

Above: Chores begin almost before they even talk. This little girl's job is bringing home the water from the village well.

Left: A woman is relaxing from dealing with the wheat. The house is made almost entirely of cow dung. The walls, painted white, are cow dung. The roof are cow dung patties, molded and formed.
