Fatehpur Sikri: Jama Masjid

Near the abandoned city, lies the beautiful mosque, Jama Masjid is also known as Dargah Mosque. It contains elements of Persian and Hindu design and is said to be a copy of the mosque in Mecca. Inside is a tomb for Shaikh Salim Chishti who predicted the birth of Akbar the Great's first sone Jehangir. The marble screens are considered some of the finest in India.

Above: Before entering the mosque for worship, a muslim must wash themselves in the fountains in front. This washing has a method which includes a repetition of face washing, hand washing, arm washing... etc.

Left: A young boy, having just cleaned up, is donning his white cap and going on to pray?

Right: Some lovely ladies outside in the courtyard of the mosque.

Left: People come from all over India praying for that little baby of their dreams. All of those red strings tied to the marble latticework... wished for babies. (At least most of them I am told)

Right: Inside the tomb of Shaikh Salim Chishti, muslims throw flowers, money and cloth... begging for the same gift that Akbar the great received... a son.

Left: A mother and child in the mosque courtyard. The little boy has dark eyeliner on to protect him from the evil eye. Evidently the eyeliner is lead based... not a good idea.

Right: A man sits against the marble latticework walls of the tomb. Praying, thinking, contemplating... who knows.
Left: Yeah, still praying, thinking, contemplating... who knows.
Right: lounging against the pillars of the tomb. Out of the sun, but in "God's light"? Perhaps.
